The Ferrograph Series 7 was introduced in the late 1960s by Ferrograph, a respected British manufacturer of professional tape recorders. Known for their robust build and broadcast-quality performance, Ferrograph machines were widely used in studios, radio stations, and by serious enthusiasts. The Series 7 represented one of the company’s most advanced consumer/professional hybrid lines, offering precision engineering, high-fidelity recording, and reliable transport mechanisms. Its rugged steel chassis, clean British design, and excellent tape handling made it a favorite among archivists and audio purists.
Technical Specifications
The Ferrograph Series 7 is a reel-to-reel tape recorder supporting tape speeds of 3¾ and 7½ ips (some models offered 1⅞ and 15 ips options). It accommodates up to 10.5-inch reels and provides 3-head configuration for record, playback, and erase. Frequency response: approx. 40 Hz – 18 kHz (at 7½ ips). Signal-to-noise ratio: >55 dB. Wow & flutter: 0.08% WRMS. Inputs/outputs include line in/out and microphone inputs. Dimensions: approx. 500 mm (W) x 250 mm (H) x 400 mm (D). Weight: around 20–22 kg depending on model. Built for longevity, the Series 7 remains one of the most collectible British reel-to-reels.
